Israel 2008

Exhibition Report by Geoffrey Kellow, Australian Commissioner

The Israel 2008 World Stamp Championship was held in Tel Aviv from 14 to 21 May 2008, to coincide with the 60th Anniversary of the establishment of the State of Israel and the first Israel stamps. All exhibition classes were offered, but no Championship Class. Instead, the Second World Stamp Championship, inaugurated at Singapore in 2004, was held in Tel Aviv. This was originally restricted to Gold and Large Gold Traditional exhibits (as was the case at Singapore), but at a late stage it was decided to include Postal History exhibits as well.

The exhibition was held at the Israel Trade Fairs & Convention Centre, unfortunately on the other side of the city to the venue hotel for those who attended. Max Stern and Charles Leski were the only Australian standholders.

The major wards for the Exhibition were:

World Stamp Championship: Luis Alemany  Brazil "Bull's Eyes"
Grand Prix: Joseph Hackmey France first Issue
Best in National Class:  Zvi Alexander Turkish Post in Palestine

The Palmares was held at the Exhibition venue. A feature was the announcement of the winner of the World Stamp Championship, where the progressive tally of points for each of the six nominated exhibits was shown in rising histograms on a large screen.
