| Adelaide Stampex 99 |
Adelaide Stampex 99 was held from Friday 5 to Sunday 7
November 1999 at the Ridley Centre, Wayville Showgrounds, Adelaide.
A full national exhibition, Adelaide Stampex 99 attracted a 127 entries occupying 618 frames (16 pages per frame) plus 17 literature entries, a total of 144 competitive entries. With a further twelve invited exhibits occupying 78 frames, visitors to the exhibition were able to enjoy just under 700 frames of high quality and varied philatelic and related non-philatelic material.
A feature of the exhibition was the strong support for all classes of philately including the various non-FIP classes. Social attracted 12 entries, polar 10 entries, frugal 2, railway 7 and postcards 12 entries.
Special mention should be made of the fact that judging was completed before the exhibition opened, this permitting awards to be posted on the frames in time for the opening of the doors. Congratulations to the Organising Committee, volunteers and the jury for a job well done; the early posting of awards being appreciated by exhibitors attending the exhibition.
Twenty four dealer stands (not counting Australia Post) were taken up by local, interstate and overseas dealers. Chris Rainey from the United Kingdom, along with John & Jan Fitzpatrick, David Holmes Philatelist Ltd, William Carson, Charles Lilley and Bill Leggett Collectables from New Zealand all travelled from overseas to support the exhibition. Olymphilex 2000 was also among the standholders.
The Palmares held at the Adelaide International Motel in Glenelg North was a "sold out" event. It was pleasing to see the social side of exhibitions being so well supported.
Australia Post special products available during the exhibition included a set of six CPS labels (each with a face value of 45c) with special "Stampex 99" overprint, the 1999 Stamp Collecting Month "Small Pond" miniature sheet overprinted "Adelaide Stampex '99 5 - 7 November 1999" plus a different postmark for each of the three days of the exhibition (see October APF News page 17).
A number of society meetings took place on the Saturday and Sunday including the Postal Stationery Society of Australia, the Postal Stationery and Postal History Society of Australia, the Rhodesia Study Circle, the Cinderella Stamp Club and the interNational Association of Philatelic Exhibitors (NAPE). The judges' critique session held on the Saturday morning was well attended by around 60 exhibitors keen to hear from the jury.
Mike Munzer again headed the youth corner offering a wide range of activities, games and challenges for school groups and other youngsters who visited the exhibition.
Photos of both the critique session and Mike hard at work with a group of juniors are featured on the front cover.
All those behind the organisation of Adelaide Stampex 99 are to be congratulated on a warm, friendly and very efficiently run exhibition.
Replica Card
No.
Since 1984 a Replica Card with a previously issued intaglio printed stamp design has been printed using the original hand engraved steel die (by permission of Australia Post) to commemorate national philatelic exhibitions in Australia.
On the occasion of Adelaide Stampex 99, the 1955 3½d Centenary of South Australia stamp was reproduced in the form of Replica Card number 38. The 134mm (high) by 95mm (wide) replica card features an impression of the original stamp die printed in an earth brown shade (the original stamp was issued in bright green) and contains a brief history of the stamp. The 1955 stamp was issued to coincide with the opening of the National Stamp Exhibition at the Adelaide Town Hall that year.
The Centenary of the First South Australian Stamp replica card can be purchased exclusively from the APF by mail order. The cost of the Replica Card is $5 plus $1:50 for postage and packing for up to 20 cards. Proceeds from the sale of replica cards are an important source of funding for the APF which in turn supports organised philately in Australia.
Order yours from the APF today.
Note, this replica card will be withdrawn from sale on 31 December 2007 and all
remaining stocks destroyed.
