from Gary Brown (Australian Commissioner) and David Figg (Assistant Commissioner)
The first National exhibition to be held in Hawke's Bay (29-31 October 2004) proved an enjoyable and successful event. The exhibition was a combined effort of the Hawke's Bay Philatelic Society and the Hastings Stamp Collectors' Club, which were celebrating respectively their 70th and 50th anniversaries. The venue was the Pettegrew Green Arena in Taradale, which was under construction at the time the exhibition was announced. It proved an excellent choice for a stamp exhibition.
Jeff Long was Jury chairman, Gary Brown was Australian Juror/Commissioner with David Figg as Deputy Commissioner. Entry to the exhibition was free to all. Baypex was a substantial exhibition, larger for example than recent ones at Wellington and Invercargill, with a total of 641 frames (competitive and non-competitive combined).
The entrances to the area by car had billboards erected advertising the exhibition. During the final week, the exhibition had features or reports of significant length on the front page of the Courier-Leader giveaway (whole Napier/Hastings area), page 3 of the other giveaway the Napier Mail, and in the local Taradale giveaway, Hawke's Bay Today and the Dominion Post. Thanks to NZ Post, some 7,000 individual invitations were also delivered. The result was a steady stream of visitors across all three days. We believe some 5,000 people attended, of both sexes and all ages.
New Australian GST customs regulations provided the Australian Commissioner with some problems, when Australian entrants wrote direct to Baypex in entering. John MacDonnell (the original Australian Commissioner) wrote that "for all future NZ Exhibitions I will be recommending that the NZ Exhibition Organizing Committee advises in all its bulletins and on its entry-form that : [a] Australian exhibitors MUST submit entries through the Australian Commissioner, and [b] The NZ Organizing Committee redirects any Australian entries [sent direct to NZ] back to the Australian Commissioner for his advice and attention, or that the NZ Organizing Committee advises the Australian Commissioner of any entries received direct from Australia [i.e those which have by-passed him] at the time of the closing of entries."
