Exhibition Report from Geoff Lewis, Australian Commissioner
Spain's experience in holding International Stamp Exhibitions gave it confidence to proceed with many innovations at the recent ESPANA 2006 exhibition at Malaga. The exhibition was housed in temporary structures situated in eight separate locations spread throughout the city. This made the exhibition more readily available to the general public. The structures were quite attractive and were well-designed to cope with all climatic conditions. There was a noticeable security presence at all times. The largest venue contained two-thirds of all exhibits including all Traditional, Postal History, Postal Stationery and Championship Class. This was a two-storey structure in the Port area, and this had the additional security of the Port authorities.
A very imaginative innovation was the specially constructed frames. The simpler type involved a central post with four frames at 90 degrees, allowing eight sides to be shown. At the top of the central post were four sets of neon lights which gave very good illumination. The second type was the same, except that between each pair of fixed frames, there was an additional frame which could be rotated around the central post. Thus a total of 16 sides could be displayed in a very compact space with excellent illumination.
A total of 81 frames from twelve Australian exhibitors were accepted for the Show. This was the seventh largest representation, only behind Spain, Germany, France, Italy, UK and USA.
The Australian exhibitors performed very well. Mark Dankin did best winning a Large Gold. Kevin Nelson and Ben Palmer won Gold medals for the first time at an International exhibition. John Bell improved to a Large Vermeil. John Pugsley and John Bodnar showed their collections for the first time at an FIP show, and both did well. Everybody else maintained their medal level.
Australia was also well represented in the Jury Room. Ray Todd was one of the Vice-Presidents of the Jury. David Benson was on the Jury, and Geoffrey Lewis was an Apprentice Juror.
