Exhibition Report by Edric Druce, Australian Commissioner
Ilsapex was held at the Exhibition Hall, Gallagher Estate in the Mid Rand, s suburb half way between Johannesburg and Petoria. The venue was excellent with all the exhibits being on the same level as the dealer / postal administration booths. Security was very intense which is common for South Africa (there were guards on the roof with sub-machine guns). The Awards Banquet was held at the function rooms of the Santon Hotel.
The Court of Honour included items from the Royal collection. The first item shown was a Cape of Good Hope - 4d error of colour se-tenant in pair with normal 1d red used in combination on wrapper with 1d Perkins Bacon Pair. I felt the outstanding cover in the display from the Queen's collection was Rhodesia - a pair of half-penny imperforate used on cover posted Salisbury on 23 February 1913.
The numbers through the door was low, due to lack of location and lack of public transport, however the numbers actually viewing the frames was high. Unfortunately there seemed to be limited advertising of the event which also contributed to the poor crowds.
There were no Australians or New Zealanders at Ilsapex in a judging capacity, but on the whole the Australasian entries did very well with three gold medals out of a total of sixteen entries.
