Exhibition Report by John Sinfield, Australian Commissioner
For 10 days from 23 October to 1 November 1998, the newly privatised Poste Italia sponsored a restricted class FIP International Exhibition at Fiera di Milano (Milan Fair). The classes were: Postal History, Thematics, Aerophilately and Literature. A non-competitive Open Class was also available.
The exhibition occupied a massive 40,000 square feet with 732 entires (including 227 literature) in 4,500 (12-on) frames. Two hundred and fifty dealers and/or postal administrations were in attendance. Decor was superb; almost the entire floor was covered in logoed carpet, with fountains, floral decorations and a laser light beam adding pleasing visual touches. There were several rest areas, bars, restaurants and massive video screens to provide a break from 'mere' stamps or spending up at the dealers. Additional interest was created by displaying two elite Ferrari cars (regrettably not available as special prizes, although one prize was indeed a Vespa motor scooter!), and a deal of Olympic Games memorabilia including medals and various Olympic torches. A fascinating display of Post Office equipment and cancellers from the turn of the century added extra variety.
Each morning there was a rush by the public to purchase every day's new issues. Over the 10 days, 15 stamp issues, three booklets, three NVT international postcards and three miniature sheets were issued by the Postal Authorities of Italy, the Vatican and San Marino. One issue was jointly with the United Nations (USA and Switzerland). There were several different postmarks every day amassing to a total of 27 overall, each with its own individual postbox receiver. At least 10 other countries provided a special Italia issue including Australia Post with overprinted the $10 miniature sheet.
The Open Class was not judged, except for awarding three special prizes, but all entries received a specially struck silver medal of participation.
