NAPEX 2009

Exhibition Report from Philip Levine
Australian Accord Judge

NAPEX 2009 was a very successful Regional Exhibition (National status) held at the Hilton Maclean, Virginia (Washington) from 5-7 June 2009 inclusive. There were 265 frames of varied material, including a One-frame 'Alphabet Challenge' (the letter 'L'), and support from three specialist Study Circles: India, Meters and Ottoman & Near East.

I went as the Accord Judge from Australia, and was part of a six-person team, headed by Peter McCann and including a UK judge too (Francis Kiddle).  I took 25 frames of material with me (five exhibitors), having obtained Cultural Heritage clearance beforehand.  The Show was set up very efficiently on the Thursday afternoon (many helpers and easy-to-assemble frames), and judging was done on the Friday and completed on the Saturday, with results on the frames in the morning.  In the USA, all the Jury judge all the exhibits. The Special Prizes and Grand Prix were announced at the Awards Banquet on the Saturday night.

The Grand Prix went to an Exhibit on the Express Posts of Maine and Reserve Grand Prix to US Precancels over 150 years.

The Show was very well-organised and was held in the ball-room of the hotel, with most people staying there. The Critique session was held on the Saturday afternoon, and was very well-attended, with all the jurors fielding questions. The was a Reception at the superb National Postal Museum on the Monday night to open an Exhibition related to Franklin D Roosevelt and his Philatelic Life. I was privileged to attend this too, meeting many influential Philatelic figures, and rounding off a most enjoyable and fulfilling time in Washington.
