Northern Beaches Stamp Expo 2003

From Ed Wolf, Exhibition Secretary

Thirty eight One-Frame entries and 8 non-competitive displays faced the visitors to the 7th Stamp Expo held on the Northern Beaches of Sydney, NSW on September 13th and 14th.  This was the first National One-Frame exhibition staged in NSW.

The entries came from every state, as was hoped for by the organizers, so that the National hobby was truly represented.  We even had two interstate dealers!

Run as a two-day event, the Friday afternoon was used to set up the frames.  The combined members of the Manly Warringah Philatelic Society and the Manly Warringah Leagues Club Stamp Club completed the setting up task in under 3 hours.

This allowed the judges, Malcolm Groom from Tasmania, Linda Lee and David Collyer from Sydney, to commence judging by 5pm Friday. Working till 10pm, recommencing at 9am on Saturday morning, judging was completed by 2pm Saturday.  The task of critique writing was finished by 3.30pm and the laminating and collating of the certificates completed for the 5pm presentation to the entrants.

The "Best of Show" was Ray Kelly's entry of Havelock-Fosters Postcards that clearly observed all the finer requirements of a One-Frame entry.  The prizegiving was followed by a critique at the frames for all those exhibitors who wanted to understand the finer points of their score.  A delicious dinner followed in the Leagues club restaurant to end a busy Saturday.

For the organizers and judges, Sunday was a day of comparative rest with a chance to add to their collections by visiting the dealers or the society club tables.  The first two issues of the latest overprinted booklet were auctioned off as a pair.  The "Popular Choice" was won by the only youth entry in the display Andrew Verdich.  What a wonderful way to end the show!

Pull down commenced at 4pm and by 5.15pm the entire hall had been returned to its original state with the entrants having collected their exhibits.  An exhibitor from Perth was able to e-mail on Tuesday morning that he had received his returned entry!   Smooth running and good teamwork by dedicated members are the stand-outs of this Expo.
