2008-09 Program

"The Wild Ones" Motorcycles through the Years
[ 18 October - 14 February 2009 ]

Curated by Elizabeth Gertsakis

Motorcycles formed a very important part of Australia's transport history. They provided a cheap method of motor transport and were the first motor vehicle for many of Australia's 60 plus age generation.

The exhibition looks at the role of the motorcycle in transport, communication, military history, rural development, farming history as well as the romance of the road and the cult status of the motorcycle in film and television.

"Here Comes the Postie" 200 Years of Postal Services in Australia
[ 28 February - 13 June 2009 ]

Curated by Richard Breckon

Australia's first postmaster was appointed in 1809. Ex-convict, Isaac Nichols, was given sole authority to take charge of Sydney's incoming and outgoing ship mails. Two hundred years later, Australia Post is the nation's oldest commercial organisation.

The growth of postal services is inextricably linked to Australia's development as a nation. The local post office was generally a focal point for neighbourly contact, and the arrival of the mail provided everyone with news from far-away family and friends. Many businesses depended exclusively on postal services in order to survive and prosper. No organisation, other than Australia Post, has enjoyed the same level of daily contact with Australians for the past 200 years.
