The Eastern Districts Schools
Thorndon Park, East Torrens and East Marden Primary Schools:
In April we looked at all sorts of philatelic items that you can collect. We had a 16 page “One Frame” Social collection to look at, to see how you can illustrate a story with philatelic items plus a few non-philatelic items. We also learnt about the difference between postal cards and postcards and how the Aust Post Maxicards are made with postal cards so they already have the postage on them and can be sent anywhere in Australia or overseas - This is rather important as half my young members now seem to have been born overseas and they wish to write to their distant relatives. In May we have the lesson on how to read the Post Office postcode codes on the bottom of envelopes We also studied the latest Peel and Stick stamps and how they differ from the sheet stamps. We follow a similar pattern of lessons each year, but the material is always fresh and different so that, in the two years I usually have the children they don’t get bored with looking at the same old stuff, and there is always new puzzles, games and quizzes.

The Briskham Award Dinner
This Award has been presented at the South Australian Annual Congress since 1957 to many outstanding philatelists.
It is awarded to a club member who is considered to have given many years of outstanding service to philately in South Australia. It is named in honour of AG Briskham (FRPSL) who was president of the Philatelic Society of South Australia during the 1950s. He was president of the ANPEX 1955 Council that was responsible for organising the National Stamp Exhibition held in Adelaide during October of that year. That exhibition was held to celebrate the Centenary of the issue of the One Penny stamp, printed by Perkins Bacon & Co of London and first issued in 1855.
A group of philatelists who attended ANPEX 1955 subscribed fifty pounds and presented it to the South Australian Advisory Council. The money was used to establish an award that was to be known as the Briskham Award. Arthur Bergen is the last recipient, having received his medal at the 2007 Congress.
Every year the South Australian Philatelic Council arrange a dinner for all Briskham Award recipients, their wives and the SAPC Council members and their partners and wives.
On Saturday, April 19th, the 2008 Dinner was at the German Club. Those attending were David Figg and wife, Robert Phaup wife, Barbara Bartsch, Michel and Jenny Roland, John Bell and Jill Govan, Anthony Presgrave, Werner Pohl and wife, Bert Wajer and wife, Allen and Alma Downes, Eric Hurrell and wife, Nick Yelland and partner, Arthur Bergen, John Bodnar, David and Pauline Edwards, Jennifer Wattison, Klaus Huettenrauch and wife, Robert Gooding and Marion Pratt. John Bell asked for reminiscences and Arthur Bergen, the 2007 recipient, started the talking - It was a most interesting evening indeed.

Arthur Barlett
From Barry Parker
Arthur Bartlett, a long time member of the PS of South Australia Inc., recently died on March 18, 2008. He was ONE HUNDRED AND ONE years old! I remember him in the nineteen eighties when he regularly attended meetings.
He was a jovial person who obviously enjoyed his evening meetings and he friends at the club. I recall he used to put a couple of envelopes of fine used One Penny King George V stamps into the club auctions. These stamps always sold as his reserves were always very reasonable, and people like me were keen to check through them.
He also often donated a bottle of wine for the raffle prize. He said that he thought it was a good idea because he didn’t drink it himself. When Arthur and his wife were able, they would attend the club Annual Dinner and our Christmas break-up meetings.
I got to know Arthur over many years and will always remember his good sense of humour, his bright nature, and his generous spirit. His support for our society is probably typified in the old saying that the more you put into life, the more you get out of it.
We miss Arthur!

Wilfred Ross Geisler
From Barry Parker, PS of SA
Wilf died on March 8, 2008, aged 91 years.
At his funeral his friends and family spoke of his life. Members of the Payneham Bowling Club remembered Wilf as their club secretary, club president and an integral part of their club over many years.
Wilf has been an active member of our PS of SA society for many years. His main interest was pre World War II Australian Issues, and this attracted him to the Australian Commonwealth Specialist Group. Wilf actively participated in meetings and contributed material for discussion. At one meeting someone mentioned telegraph punctures. At the next meeting Wilf produced an amazing collection of this material, including Robes and Arms issues, as well as the traditional Kangaroos.
Wilf also gave of his own time as a volunteer in the SAPC Circuit Book Office for many years. Spending many hours. on regular days of the week, to help prepare the Circuit Books that are so popular at all SA and NT clubs..
We will remember Wilf as a quiet gentle person whose participation and contribution to organised philately will not be forgotten. He will be sadly missed!.
